First correct answer posted to comments wins one of those tiny airline liquor bottles filled with crushed Sweet Tarts.
According to the most recent statistics we could find (1999), which country (at 12.2 liters of alcohol per person per year) currently holds the title for highest consumption of alcohol per capita?
Posted by BT at April 12, 2002 09:52 AMWell, just going strictly by cultural stereotypes:
Finland?
Russia?
Well it always *used* to be Germany...so it could still be...

Posted by: bootsy on April 12, 2002 10:33 AMThe good ones are taken. I'll try the Netherlands.
Posted by: bup on April 12, 2002 11:00 AMi almost know for a fact that the answer is russia, but that's already taken...so i provide the following guesses:
Sorry, mlang, Russia's not even in the top ten.
You're all wrong so far. And my source for this is a Netherlandish alcohol industry association which has done this study for years.
France, by the by, was the perennial champion until the current titleholder knocked them off. They are now #4.
Posted by: BT on April 12, 2002 11:24 AMSweden or maybe Norway, then?
Posted by: Gavin on April 12, 2002 01:26 PMOr how about Iceland?
It's a real party country, I hear.
A hint for the puzzled: it’s an EU country, and one curious statistic is that (according to Lonely Planet), foreigners make up 30% of the population – more than any other in the EU.
Posted by: BT on April 12, 2002 01:53 PMMonaco?
Liechtenstein?
(I really want to say Andorra, of course.)
the vatican!
(all those masses use up a lot of wine, you know.)
Duty-free shops in airports all across the continent!
Posted by: Gavin on April 12, 2002 02:06 PMwhile stereotyping, we overlooked the most obvious:
ireland!
(which i suspect is actually the correct response. and i feel qualified to further this stereotype; having at least one irish grandparent, so don't get all pc on me, wombat cruë.)

please be right
please be right

(this is the first prize i've really really wanted.)
The buzzer of wrongness continues to buzz.
Posted by: BT on April 12, 2002 03:03 PMsanta maria! still not solved? well, belgium is the eu-iest of all the eu nations, and all those diplomats and eu parliamentarians, etc. might comprise one-third of the belgian populace.
as far as i know, flanders isn't a nation-state anymore, but luxembourg still is, and it's the only one of the 'tiny' countries not yet listed.
but my best guess is the czech republic (if they're in the eu, that is). it's my understanding that you'll find more americans in prague than you will in elizabeth, new jersey...plus we all know how ol' bt likes to tie things together with the gossamer threads of his intellect; and the czech republic figured prominently in last friday's quiz, so...
Posted by: mlang on April 13, 2002 09:31 AMp.s. if i'm still wrong, mr. t., could you give me just one more hint? i don't suppose that the correct answer would be the county of origin for one of metafilter's most prominent members?
Posted by: mlang on April 13, 2002 09:33 AMI just want to point out that eu-iest has four vowels in a row, once you leave out the hyphen: euiest.
And to guess Italy.
Posted by: Gavin on April 13, 2002 10:19 AMWell, persistence and the process of eliminatiopn have paid off -- mlang takes it with Luxembourg. When you think about it, this probably makes sense, as the wine-junkie properties of the French would be combined with German beerishness. Congratulations, mlang!
I have the complete top ten list at the office -- I'll post it here Monday.
Next week, we're looking for a Guest Quizmaster. This is YOUR CHANCE to run the quiz. I don't know if this'll be a one-time shot or a repeating event. In any case, those interested in this thankless task should let me know.
Posted by: BT on April 13, 2002 11:26 AMLuxemburg am I the only one that knows how to use google or is that prohibited by the rules.
Posted by: Norm Jenson on April 13, 2002 09:56 PMSo now I see in looking at previous quizzes that the answer is supposed to come from our memories. I never remember drinking that much before, but I did remember google. I Suppose that doesn't count. My apologies if I spoiled the fun. Since you are using movabletype you could have a graphic with the rules then a popup link to it for each quiz. Then when some poor soul arrives off the street he would know the rules.
Posted by: Norm Jenson on April 13, 2002 10:04 PMI guess reading not skimming the previous posts works as well.
