Punt

In my haste to wrap up matters in time to catch an early flight to the Show Me State, and having completely failed to find time to arrange a Guest Quiz for Friday, I blush to inform you that this Friday will be Quizless. I'll be out of reach of all things Internet, family-reunionizing my head off.

IF, however, the mysterious and nearly omniscient Gavin Edwards, who sometimes swoops this way on his mental flights hither and yon, can clear a few minutes of his schedule to march in and save the trivial day, a quiz might yet appear. I suggest you all applaud and stomp and yell "GA-VIN GA-VIN GA-VIN" in the comments, until the sheer force of public need brings the man himself to your beck and call.

FRIDAY QUIZ #112: PARADISE ISLAND

Okay, despite the great lack of chanting from the assembled throng, and despite my inability to log on to make a new entry, I am here. Since none of these prizes ever get given out anyway, I am pleased to announce that the winner of this week's Wombat Quiz will win a bar of solid gold, a replica of the ones seen in Three Kings.

At any rate:

You may be aware that William Moulton Marston invented Wonder Woman in 1941 after being informed by the owner of All-American Comics that a woman character couldn't sell. "Like hell it can't," Marston reportedly replied, and proceeded to create the Amazon princess. You may not, however, be aware that Marston was also responsible for an innovation, a sometimes controversial one, in law enforcement.

What was that innovation?

As ever, do not consult Google or those very-fine/near-mint back issues preserved in Mylar. You may guess as many times as you want, but one guess per post.

The Miranda warning?

(Miranda just seems like it would be the name of one of WW's sisters there on Paradise Island.)

Howzabout the wiretap?

The lasso of truth?

Posted by: Scott on June 11, 2004 11:58 AM

I'll up that to the polygraph, which would be a nice tie between Wonder Woman and law enforcement.

electrified genital clamps?

handcuffs?

Jonathan has it, with a prompt from Scott!

Martson was also the inventor of the systolic blood pressure test used in polygraphs. There are unconfirmed reports that he also developed an invisible airplane, but that the government hasn't declassified the files yet.

Thanks, everyone, for following the quiz into the comments section. (Hey, gang, let's put on the show right here!)

Wahoo!
I've actually had the displeasure of taking a polygraph test to work in retail. Strapped into a chair with a giant band around my chest:

Q: Are you nervous?
A: No, I shake like this all the time.

Now, to get this job all I had to do was get fingerprinted...

You don't even want to know the vetting procedure I had to go through before Bill let me be guest quizmaster.

Posted by: Gavin on June 11, 2004 02:45 PM

Lest you think Bill is taking the day off, I have knowledge that he is in fact battling alien octopuses... octopi... octopux... eight legged freaks.

(Sorry for the giant-ass size.)

I'm back -- and boy is my crowbar-arm tired!

Thanks, Gavin, and sorry about the password problem.

Besides the hideous radioactive armored squid things, my trip to the ancestral home of Harry S. Truman (or at least near the highway exit that leads there) involved, in no particular order, a swimming-related injury (mine), a visit to the ER (for a possibly-insect-bitten daughter, who is incidentally just fine), a bout of Wal-Mart-related disorientation, and "Crab Rangoon." About some of which I will wax prosaic, above.
