The tragedy of “The News of the World”
On April 5, 2011, “The News of the World” picked up four British newspaper awards of the annual best entertainment news reporter, the best news reporter, the best visual effects and the best exclusive news. To everyone’s surprise, three months later on July 10, the last phase ended its history of 168 years with “Thanks! Goodbye” in the front page of this newspaper. The reason for the end of “The News of the World” is that they eavesdropped on many British royals.
In May, 2005, “The News of the World” published the message that Prince William’s knee tendon was hurt. Since few people knew this information, the royalty began to doubt it and reported this case to the police.
In April, 2006, after “The Sun” published the news that Prince Harry was addicted to strip club, “The News of the World” made the track report and carried the mail in which Prince William made fun of Harry. This event got the royal journalist Clive Goodman and the private detective Glenn Mulcaire arrested.
Until now, the investigation had come to a conclusion. However, the public were not very disgusted with the disrespect of “The News of the World” to the royalty. And other medium still had a rising enthusiasm on the wiretap scandal.
In 2009, according to the report in “The Guardian”, many stars and politicians had reasons to believe that they had been intercepted.
According to “The Guardian” on July 21, 2009, people wiretapped by “The News of the World” perhaps had reached up to 3,000.
As pressure of public opinion accumulated, Metropolitan Police Service began to investigate officially and the decline of “The News of the World” started.
In April, 2011, eavesdropping on cell phone of the actress Sienna Miller was exposed and the deputy editor of “The News of the World” Ian Edmond was arrested.
On July 4, 2011, “The Guardian” reported that “The News of the World” illegally eavesdropped on the phone of missing girl Millie Doyle and her family and deleted some messages, disturbing the survey of the police. This event was the last straw for “The News of the World”. What they had done to the innocent girl angered British public and brought ruin upon itself.
On July 6, British Parliament held an emergency meeting for this scandal and promised to launch an independent investigation.
On July 7, 2011, James Murdoch, son of Murdoch, announced that “The News of the World” was closed.
Therefore, the above newspaper “Thanks! Goodbye!” came out. In addition to regretting the girl’s death, many people like me are worried about our own privacy as well. I felt that all data stored in cell phone were not safe, so I deleted all files in my cell phone after reading this report. However, it also made me nervous when I heard that some free data recovery software like MiniTool Power Data Recovery can amazingly undelete data. So I looked for solution on the internet. Fortunately, I found some partition magic MiniTool Partition Wizard. With the function “Wipe Partition”, I eliminated all data thoroughly. Even some free data recovery software can not restore deleted files (It is said that the US military use the same principle to wipe files). Therefore, we are not worried about information leak in storage device.
